Couple Auctions

I've got a couple eBay auctions going this week. First up: my female anatomical figure from anatomytools.com. This is the 24" version from around 2012 (I have since "downgraded" to the 12"). The tip of her left thumb is missing, but other than that, she's in good shape. You can bid on it here.

Next up, I have a complete set of my Book of Death variant covers, including 2 versions of issue 1. They will all be signed, and can be personalized if requested. You can bid on the set here. I plan on selling at least 2 more complete sets, so don't fret too much if you miss out.

Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: 1953

HELLBOY AND THE B.P.R.D.: 1953 #1 Cover. 2015.
Gouache and acrylic on bristol board, 13 × 19″.

This may have already been posted online, but I'm yet to officially announce the project here on the blog. My Pops and I will be joining the "Mignolaverse" with a 3-issue mini-series written by Chris Roberson and Hellboy creator Mike Mignola, with colors by Dave Stewart! You can read more about it at CBR and EW. We've already got 1 issue in the bag and are hard at work on the second... all while trying to keep tags on my new Hellgirl.

ADVENTURE TIME. 2015. Acryla Gouache on cover, 7 × 10.5″.

Hey, guys! Remember when I used to blog? Me neither. But here's a recent painting to try and get back in the swing of things, at least for today. This is part of Hero Initiative's long line of "100 Project" auctions, with proceeds to benefit the charity. I'll be sure to post again when it's up for sale.

The Winter Soldier Time Lapse

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER. 2014.
Gouache, watercolor, and acrylic on illustration board, 16 × 24″.

I don't think I'm ever going to have time to record commentary for this video, so here's the time lapse with some nice Mozart accompaniment. The piece is painted with Holbein gouache on Strathmore Wet Media Board. The main brush I used was a Silver Brush Black Velvet Round #8 (but I also use various sizes). The first section is sepia gouache, applied as a thin wash, to lock down all the details. It's painted over a digital print that I transferred to the board by printing on acetate, then burnishing.

Even though I was essentially "tracing" the likenesses, some of them still got away from me and I had to fix them in Photoshop due to time restraints.

The graphics were painted with Acryla Gouache, and the text was done in Photoshop (with some guidance from my graphic designer wife). As you'll see in the background of the video, I was painting from tons of reference on my computer, including the inspiration for the piece, Robert McGinnis' classic Man with the Golden Gun poster.

The Infant Terrible

THE INFANT TERRIBLE. 2015.
Ink(ed by Joe Rivera) on bristol board with digital color, 11 × 17″.

This subject matter is wildly appropriate for my current life... which is one of the reasons I took it on. If you don't recognize the character, it's from Fantastic Four #24. Also, I've got a quick interview up at barburus.org.

DAVE CHAPPELLE. 2015. Goucahe on paper, 9 × 12″.

Can't say I added much to this reference. But that doesn't mean I didn't have fun painting it. Loved this show.

New Digital Goods

Hands created in Sculptris

I've got a couple new items in my digital store. The hands are $5, DRM-free, and ready for posing and lighting. They were created in Sculptris, an easy-to-learn (and free) 3D program. The Page Specs template is a freebie — I print it out on stacks of my blank boards before I print digital layouts and crop marks. Have a great weekend!

Wacky Reference Wednesdays, No. 290

BOOK OF DEATH #1 COVER. 2015.
Ink(ed by Joe Rivera) on bristol board with digital color, 11 × 17″.

Book of Death #1 comes out today, and you can see a preview here. I had the privilege of designing the look for one of the stars of the book, a character named Tama. I won't go into the details of her origin (in case you haven't read the The Valiant) but originally I was going to give her a wet suit of some kind. You can see my inspiration board below, including lots of dreads. (She's also based on my wife as a little girl.)

In other exciting news, The Valiant got a Harvey nomination for best mini-series! Aaaand, my Dad got nominated for Best Inker once again. Congrats, "grandpa!"

Hellboy '53

HELLBOY STUDIES (detail). 2015.
Ink and watercolor on bristol board, 11 × 17″.

I'm very excited to announce that I'll be penciling a 3-issue mini-series for Dark Horse, Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: 1953! My Dad will be providing the macabre inks, with that classic-Hellboy palette provided by the great Dave Stewart. The story will be co-written by Chris Roberson and Mike Mignola. Awesome!

How'd I get the gig? Last year, Mignola accepted my friend request on Facebook. How cool is that? As you may have heard, I've had my hands full lately (with a certain tiny lady), but I can't wait to get started. I'll show what I can, when I can, but for now you can take a peek at my character studies.

As for my own book, I know I keep pushing it back (I know), but I keep getting hard-to-turn-down offers. The good news is, I finished the official "treatment" and have sent it off to my trusted writer-friends (and anyone else who was misguided enough to offer their help).

Wacky Reference Wednesdays, No. 289

BATMAN #33. 2014. Ink(ed by Joe Rivera)
on bristol board with digital color, 11 × 17″.

Did I ever post this reference? If I did, I don't have a record of it (and I apologize). My Dad inked this piece and I added the post-it notes and strings digitally. The string motif was taken from a page of the book, a splash that featured the Riddler.
