Wacky Reference Wednesdays, No. 292

DAVE CHAPPELLE. 2015. Goucahe on paper, 9 × 12″.

Can't say I added much to this reference. But that doesn't mean I didn't have fun painting it. Loved this show.

New Digital Goods

Hands created in Sculptris

I've got a couple new items in my digital store. The hands are $5, DRM-free, and ready for posing and lighting. They were created in Sculptris, an easy-to-learn (and free) 3D program. The Page Specs template is a freebie — I print it out on stacks of my blank boards before I print digital layouts and crop marks. Have a great weekend!

Wacky Reference Wednesdays, No. 290

BOOK OF DEATH #1 COVER. 2015.
Ink(ed by Joe Rivera) on bristol board with digital color, 11 × 17″.

Book of Death #1 comes out today, and you can see a preview here. I had the privilege of designing the look for one of the stars of the book, a character named Tama. I won't go into the details of her origin (in case you haven't read the The Valiant) but originally I was going to give her a wet suit of some kind. You can see my inspiration board below, including lots of dreads. (She's also based on my wife as a little girl.)

In other exciting news, The Valiant got a Harvey nomination for best mini-series! Aaaand, my Dad got nominated for Best Inker once again. Congrats, "grandpa!"

By the Power of Grayskull...

CASTLE GRAYSKULL. 2015. Gouache on paper, 9 × 12″.

A couple dear friends got married this weekend. This was their gift. There's a little, ugly building in Brooklyn where they met, and we call it Castle Grayskull. Congrats, guys!

Hellboy '53

HELLBOY STUDIES (detail). 2015.
Ink and watercolor on bristol board, 11 × 17″.

I'm very excited to announce that I'll be penciling a 3-issue mini-series for Dark Horse, Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: 1953! My Dad will be providing the macabre inks, with that classic-Hellboy palette provided by the great Dave Stewart. The story will be co-written by Chris Roberson and Mike Mignola. Awesome!

How'd I get the gig? Last year, Mignola accepted my friend request on Facebook. How cool is that? As you may have heard, I've had my hands full lately (with a certain tiny lady), but I can't wait to get started. I'll show what I can, when I can, but for now you can take a peek at my character studies.

As for my own book, I know I keep pushing it back (I know), but I keep getting hard-to-turn-down offers. The good news is, I finished the official "treatment" and have sent it off to my trusted writer-friends (and anyone else who was misguided enough to offer their help).
